Witching & Waning

A waxing crescent moon surrounded by white and yellow clouds in a pitch black night sky

Momma and I love the back porch, especially when October comes. She sits in her dark navy rocker, swaying slow to the sounds of the croaking frog. I sit in my rattan rocking chair. I’m 12 now, but just a few years ago, I sat in it like it was bent for me. Now, the wood pinches my sides some; it only hurts a little. Momma can’t part with it, though. It’s a nice piece, she says. I think she keeps it because it reminds her of when I was small.

Our dog rolls around in the brittle, yellow grass and me and Momma smile. It’s cool enough to enjoy some warmth from our scorched, sooty chimenea, yet not so cold that we see our breath when we whisper about the deeds of the day.

Together, we watch the crescent moon, orange wisps gently passing over. We delight in autumn’s colors sneakily seeping through. Funny how the sun used to be up ‘til bedtime: those glowing nights spent larking about with pals. Now darkness edges in earlier and earlier. But, by the light of this waning crescent, Momma and I eagerly conspire. For this is the season of mischief.

The above is my #FallWritingFrenzy entry!! Thank you to the hosts, Kaitlyn, Ameerah, Lydia! It’s been so fun getting into the spirit of autumn and Halloween within my writing! Totally new adventure!
